Where does rose scent come from....? :P?

This may seem like a dumb question but it just occured to me that I don't really know which part of a rose produces the fragrance. Is it inherently in the mature petals? Do they pick up the scent from an inner part of the bloom? Thanks, I'll be back for best answer
